I've been buying funds, all kinds... large cap, small cap, growth, aggressive, blue chip, international, about 25 different kinds in all... a very widely diversified portfolio is the safest way to go... I don't pick individual stocks, that's too much like betting on a single horse... a single fund will give you thousands of stocks and reduce down side risk, the more diversified your selection of funds, the better.....
