That's a different subject than the death penalty. I would do what I could in defense of myself or family up to and including killing the aggressor to prevent them from killing at the time, but that's a lot different than giving someone the death penalty after the fact.
Many countries that don't have the death penalty have armed forces that were sent to Croatia and Bosnia for example and fought in the second world war.
