Alcatel sells DSL unit to Thomson multimedia for €456m in shares
Alcatel (fr:013000), the French telecoms equipment maker, said on Thursday it had signed an agreement to sell its DSL (direct subscriber line) modem business to France's Thomson multimedia (fr:018453) for €456 million in new shares. Thomson would pay Alcatel 9.5 million new shares for the division, which had an market share of 22 percent in 2000, the company said, citing Dell'Oro market research. The agreement was in line with Alcatel's strategic repositioning in the network infrastructure market, the company said. Alcatel (us:ala) shares opened down 2.6 percent at €29.60 and Thomson (us:tms) dropped 1.9 percent to €45.30 in Paris.
