Should Intel buy another graphics chip company?

Message #136851 from Paul Engel at Jun 6, 2001 10:40 PM

"Intel hasn't yet produced a high end graphics chips - but just suppose they did - e.g,, buy ATI and put the RADEON core inside a chip set."

"How fast do you think NVIDIA's sales will plummet ? "

About as fast as competing graphics chip sales plummeted after Intel bought Chips and Technologies for $400 million?

It's probably _not_ a good idea for Intel to buy whatever company is the hot kid on the block, whether Nvidia or ATI or S3 or 3Dfx or whatever. Intel pays out $200 or $400 or $600 million, the founders and designers cash out and move on, and Intel is left with rental space on North First Street.

Licensing the graphics core seems like a more nimble approach.

I can't wait for "IA 64 with special Quake enhancements."
