You are losing me here, my friend. All punishment is retribution. Society does it because privatized justice leads to vendetta and becomes endless feuding. But the idea is to not let someone off the hook, by making them suffer in a manner proportionate to the offense. The death penalty is invoked in instances where the murder is so heinous that something more than a life sentence is required, to reflect the special nature of the crime.......
