Although I think you are right to question the way we deal with those capable of reform and incorrigibles, I do not think that is the first issue in sentencing. The first question is how the punishment fits the crime for which the person has been convicted. Now, you are correct, for someone like McVeigh we would probably have to reinstitute drawing and quartering to register the contempt for his crime that is appropriate. As things stand, there will never be full satisfaction. However, there is adequate reason to curtail overtly barbarous practices. Thus, more subtle gradations will be lost. Still, unless a very good argument against the death penalty is put forth, we can register the difference between more ordinary murder and heinous offenses.......
