You know, it's getting a little quiet and boring around here - "eigenvectors" - sheesh!
So I thought - what could stir up more trouble than an on-line fight involving Cramer!
(Just Kidding Mike!!)
There was a battle royal on Real Money (The pay site for The Street.com) during the "Columnist Conversation." I'm presenting a small part of it, because I think it's a pretty unusual occurrence, unique to the internet, not something you're likely to see on TV.
There's nothing involving biotech, so I (seriously) hope it won't get us into a fight. The main columnist here, Don Luskin, seemed actually pro-biotech, but I didn't follow him much.
The antagonisms I think had been building up over months, so I haven't included all the details of what started it today.
Columnist Conversation is an almost real-time internet dialog, much like our thread, for example The most recent stuff is at the top, so you have to START AT THE BOTTOM AND READ UP.
It begins with Don Luskin complaining to Doug Kass that Doug had mischaracterized Don's last post, which I think Doug eventually admitted was true, and apologized, but as I said, I think the main thrust is the hostility that had been building up over months, not the specific incident.

Editor's note: This is Jane Penner, Jim Cramer's editor. Cramer called in this response to Don Luskin's decision to resign from RealMoney.com:
Don,
I have historically cared more about performance than perhaps I should, but that is what this game is about and that is what RealMoney.com is about.
Performance is a double-edged sword; when it's good, you are king -- when it's bad you're a bum. I didn't make those rules, I just play by them.
Good luck.

You're Goofy 6/07/01 4:25 PM ET Hey bro...you think the majority of us write soley for the money? That's silly...we write to provide value, to give something back. Further, if you're implying that you can NOW tell the truth, what does that mean you've been doing?
I will not get into a Pi**ing match ...it's wasted energy...but no, I certainly do not want to join you.
Enjoy the freedom.
----------- Don Luskin
Why?
6/07/01 4:15 PM ET Why Todd? Because I'm the only guy here who can afford to tell the truth. You and the rest of them are on the payroll. So you have to take it and take it and take it, and never get to dish it out. I'm a free man. Want to join me?

but why? 6/07/01 4:11 PM ET Don, I don't know you, nor have I ever conversed with you on the site....in short, I've never had a beef with you.
Having said that, I gotta tell ya, if you're gonna walk away, it's entirely more classy to do it your head high. Mocking others for losses (while at the same time, gloating)is bush league, and an unfortunate way to end your tenure at realmoney.
Good luck to you.
----------- Don Luskin
I'm outta here
6/07/01 3:56 PM ET Well, Cramer, you'll have to duke it out in the kitchen without me. I quit. I'm through contributing articles here every day for no pay, and taking nothing but abuse.
Want to talk about performance? All of yours that I can see is the TSCM which I sold at $65. You have no way to make up the losses to whomever bought it from me.
Good bye and good luck.
No TSCM

Thanks Don
6/07/01 11:21 AM ET Thanks for telling him to pick on me! (LOL)
--------------- Don Luskin
Doug, more
6/07/01 10:47 AM ET Actually Doug, if you want to point to skepticism in tech, why pick on me when I haven't said a word about it? Pick on Cramer -- he's the skeptic. Is there some reason you'd rather pick on me?
------------ Don Luskin
Doug
6/07/01 10:45 AM ET Doug, why don't you try to get over your reflexive need to disagree with me about everything. Did you even read my CC posting? I said I agreed with you for gossakes. And nothing else in the post was bearish on tech or anything else, as you seem to be implying I said. I simply observed that tech and non-tech, broadly speaking, have been moving in parallel. You have a problem with that? Get over it. |
