I use a resource boutique brokerage and am treated very well but the question you are asking is a very good one. My retirement plan is with FIdelity and they charge 3 times what my "full service" but friendly broker charges me for the Canadian trades. It is unconsciounable for them to advertise as"discount" brokers in my opinion. Hopefully someone will have a good answer for you. There is a thread on this very subject you might read.
