Digitimes:AMD expects to grab double-digit share in server and workstation market by year-end

While unveiling its new Athlon MP processor at Computex Taipei on June 5, AMD announced its forays into the server and workstation market. Ellett pointed out that in the past year, the growth of the low-end server market was stronger than that of the PC market, which was suffering a downward trend. AMD will target small and medium-size enterprises and focus on 2U and thinner servers and workstations with two to four processors in the following year. Considering the market’s growth trend, Ellett estimates that AMD will capture a double-digit share in the market for low-end servers and workstations by year-end.

Ellett pointed out that IBM and Sun are still dominating the server market, but with the price of x86 architecture-based servers plunging, those two heavyweights, for profit reasons, may consider whether to continue to adopt the x86 architecture. Therefore, AMD has opportunities to grab market share from them.
