Carlson restaurant unit to acquire Pick Up Stix chain

Friday, June 8, 2001

The restaurant division of Minnetonka-based Carlson Companies Inc. said Thursday that it will acquire Pick Up Stix Inc., a Chinese-food chain with 52 locations in
California and Nevada.

"Adding a fast-casual concept to the Carlson Restaurants portfolio is something we have wanted to do for quite some time," Wallace Doolin, president and CEO of
Dallas-based Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, said in a prepared statement. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Carlson plans to expand Pick Up Stix, initially in southern California, Nevada and Arizona, spokeswoman Amy Freshwater said. It has not been determined whether the
concept eventually will come to the Twin Cities area, she said.

The restaurants, which range in size from 1,400 to 2,500 square feet, primarily are placed in suburban shopping centers.

Carlson's restaurant division -- which operates T.G.I. Friday's and other brands -- will retain Pick Up Stix President and CEO Charles Zhang, the chain's corporate staff
and San Clemente, Calif., offices.
