>>>i argue that the #1 determinant of success in life is one's parents. bill gates born to a drug addicted welfare queen in seattle's rainier district would not be the same bill gates as the one born to two lawyers at a precise time in history. fortunate people often confuse skill with good fortune, imho.

i'm not saying some successful folks aren't skilled, they are. i'm saying the reason they are skilled is in large part due to their upbringing - with the parents being an integral part.<<<

Oh, agreed. People born on second base (middle class?) often think they hit a "double." The best thing you can say about them is they didn't screw up what advantages they were born with through crime, drugs etc...

Because America is a largely fluid society (as compared to other parts of the world) we tend to ignore and outright deny on occasion that the issue of class plays any significant role in our politics and culture...just like we try to ignore the issue of race or sexism for that matter.

BTW--I've been gone from the computer, lunch date, meetings etc...Did Luc declare thread amnesty again? <ggg> I hardly recognize the place...<ggg>
