If the sole reason for banning people was a profusion of off- topic posts, you would have a point. If the qualifications for participation were clearly set out, which, in my experience, is not usually true, you might have a point. Instead, it is easy for people to wander onto moderated threads in all innocence and to be treated shabbily. They are going to complain. As I said, the rationale that some number of people will cease to use the SI site unless they can exercise greater control over discussions, and that there is a marketplace of threads, may be sufficient to justify moderated threads, but one should not expect that there will be no controversy......
