to revisit this rescue disk question one more time, you asked, "(i) wonder if they really need frequent updating".

i wanted to make sure that in addition to my own personal opinion, that i also refer to symantec's 'official' recommendation along these lines. they say....

"The more recent your Rescue Disks, the better your chances of a full recovery. Update your Rescue Disks whenever you update your virus protection, install new software, or make changes to your hardware."
