AT&T Cuts Plans for Interactive TV

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two years after selecting Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) to develop a
sophisticated interactive-television service, AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news) is scaling back those plans and now expects to roll out a less-complex version that has yet to be developed, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition on Friday.
The decision is a significant change of course for AT&T, the nation's largest cable operator, and a blow to Microsoft, which invested $5 billion in AT&T as part of a deal to deploy its software TV set-top boxes to as many as 10 million sets, the newspaper said.
Since then, AT&T has been testing advanced software from a Microsoft competitor, and AT&T officials concluded that consumers were not ready for many of the advanced features that the phone and cable company envisioned offering, the paper said.
