Well, I went to Catholic school until 7th grade, so no Jews there. In 7th grade I switched to public school. There was one Jewish girl in 7th grade, and the other girls used to tease her about her nose. She always wore nice outfits - I think her parents had a department store - and they teased her about her family having money, too. They seemed to be her friends, and it seemed to be friendly teasing, with a bit of a bitchy edge, but coming from Catholic school, where nothing like that would be tolerated, I was offended.
I don't remember my parents, grandparents, or family friends ever even using the word "Jew", or said anything about Jews in any way, shape, or form, except in the context of Jesus and the Bible, and only in a factual way then, not like "the Jews killed Christ" - the Romans killed Christ, after all. He was crucified by Roman soldiers at the direction of Pontius Pilate, a Roman governor.
I am guessing that anti-Semitism must be a Protestant thing, but don't know for certain. Maybe some Catholics are anti-Semitic, and I just never ran into them.
The first time I heard "the Jews run the banks" I was extremely puzzled, because I knew it wasn't true. |
