win2000 sp2 and norton speed disk revisited....
about three weeks ago i noted ( #reply-15827270 ) that symantec products were producing warnings after installing win2000 service pack 2.
i just now received this symantec email titled Subject: Norton Utilities for Windows SupportNow! News Bulletin: June 8, 2001
*********************************
"Speed Disk and Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000
When running Norton Speed Disk after installing Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000, you see the following message:
"Warning! This version of Norton Speed Disk has not been tested with the Service Pack..."
We are working on an update to address this message, which will be available through LiveUpdate as soon as possible. Generally, there are no significant problems with service packs, and we have not discovered or received any reports from customers of problems with Service Pack 2 other than the appearance of the message."

we knew that.... <g3>
but now for something really special....
the email bulletin also contains info that may shine a light on the disk locking prob that our dear friend and thread member e was having not too long ago! i haven't had time to properly digest the whole subject, but here's the meat....
*********************************
"System Doctor and the Windows Millennium Update
The Windows Millennium Update installer has a conflict with any utility that requires a "disk lock." Disk Doctor, ScanDisk, Speed Disk, Defrag, and many other disk utilities require that a disk be "locked" so that the utility has “direct disk access,” because when more than one application has direct access to your hard disk, “bad things” can happen (this situation is similar to the “restart due to disk writes” issue described previously).
What makes the problem with System Doctor and the Windows Update Installer unique is that System Doctor runs continually in the background. Consequently, when one updates Windows Millennium, the Windows update installer is unable to install the update and a large number of zero byte files are created, which results in a failed update installation. The solution is to shut down System Doctor before running the Windows Millennium Update.
As of this writing, updating Windows 98 or 95 does not have this problem. Nevertheless, we recommend shutting down all running applications as a precautionary measure before updating or installing any new application
