James, I disagree with you, a company like AMAT should start and build a public image, not just for various reasons mentioned here, but to permeate in potential customers the difference between AMAT and their competitors. Everyone has publicity in various semi journals, and some of the graphics of the competitors is even better than that of AMAT. But, no one can afford to advertise to the masses (only a small portion of it being the target customers), that by itself sets AMAT a level above all the other competitors. It should create a situation as the one IBM benefited from for a long time: "No one gets fired for buying from IBM", similarly, such a campaign will differentiate AMAT enough from the competition to get to the stage that "nobody gets fired buying from AMAT".

It is not so much who is reached by this advertising campaign, but its existence of the campaign that creates in the mind of those few potential buying influences in companies that "warm and fuzzy feeling", these guys are here to stay.
