They write their own BIOS, and design and manufacture their own motherboards. They even create proprietary chipsets. Both these companies, just like Apple, provide a product with well defined interfaces to the outside world, provide upgrade paths for memory, CPU, add-in cards, etc. And software developers can use development tools and APIs to create applications. How are Compaq and IBM different than Apple from a closed system point of view?
