Indeed, even switching all production to Palomino by the end of the year is questionable. T-Bird works great and has a smaller die size than Palomino. By continuing TBird production right up to the introduction of Thoroughbred AMD can achieve higher unit volume. Additionally, AMD can charge a small premium for Palomino versus TBird, thus establishing a slightly higher ASP for Palomino than would be possible with Palomino alone.

Where AMD may be making a mistake is with their pledge to continue producing Palomino through the end of 2002. Considering these 0.18-micron Athlons will be competing against the desktop Tualatin, I think AMD should essentially replace Palomino with Thoroughbred while continuing TBird production through at least the end of 2002.
