Not long ago I asked Nicole Knowles about the nature of Infospace's relationship with the British wireless operator Orange. She told me that Infospace provides the short-message-system, or SMS, that Orange offers its customers. Infospace receives payment per SMS message sent over Orange's network. SMS has mushroomed in Europe during the past year, and recent estimates have SMS related revenues in Europe around $15 billion on an annualized basis. Needless to say that SMS is a substantial growth business in Europe and having Orange, on of the U.K.'s largest wireless carriers, is a nice client for Infospace to have. I thought I'd mention this because there has been no discussion on SI about this rather esoteric aspect of Infospace's business. Other carriers use Infospace's SMS product, but I can't provide any more detail. I was curious about Orange, though, because Orange is listed as a partner company of Infospace's in Infospace's most recent annual report, and because I hadn't seen Infospace issue a press release about Orange before although Orange did once issue a press release mentioning Infospace.
