Both these companies, just like Apple, provide a product with well defined interfaces to the outside world, provide upgrade paths for memory, CPU, add-in cards, etc. And software developers can use development tools and APIs to create applications. How are Compaq and IBM different than Apple from a closed system point of view? Apple supplies the OS, and furthermore doesn't license the OS to anyone. I thought everyone knew that.
