Intel Investors - Re: Compaq/HP/AMD K6 "Alleged" Announcement

There have been at least two reports as to HP and Compaq allegedly signing on to use AMD's K6.

They both seem to originate, as usual, with AMD making the announcement. Funny, AMD always tries to "announce" products before their own customers can announce them!

Anyhow, this is the Wall Street Journal's version.

As you will note, AMD is announcing that Compaq, HP, Bill Clinton and Julia Roberts are all "evaluating" the AMD K6.

Hewlett-Packard, Compaq Evaluating AMD's K6

By Mark Boslet

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) and
Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) are evaluating Advanced Micro Devices
Inc.'s (AMD) new K6 processor, as are other
computer makers, an AMD spokesman said.

But neither top-tier computer maker is poised to announce that it will
produce computers with the
new chip, the spokesman said. Reports circulated late Friday suggesting
that both
Hewlett-Packard and Compaq would begin selling computers with the K6.

Securing two influential customers such as Hewlett-Packard and Compaq
would be welcome
news for AMD, coming on the heels of its announcement that Digital
Equipment Corp. (DEC)
would begin making K6 machines.

An agreement also would amount to more competition for Intel Corp. (INTC),
the market leader.
Just this week Intel notified its computer customers of price cut of up to 60%
on some of its mainstream Pentium processors, a move that analysts
attributed to competition from AMD and
Cyrix Corp. (CYRX).

NYSE-listed AMD closed Friday at 36 7/8, down

PS

I was only kidding about Bill Clinton and Julia Roberts.

They would never use CPU chips that weren't were made by Intel.
