Americans are more concerned with principles, perhaps, and the concept of not abandoning friendly nations.

Funny you mention this and would mention Taiwan in the same message. If American were interested in principles, we would have gone to war over Taiwan many moons ago, not switch recognition to China and breaking our mutual defense treaty Taiwan.

Part of the problem with American foreign policy is that it is too focus on what happens in Europe and Israel. Europe probably because most Americans are Europeans by descent and Israel because of the power of the Jewish lobby.

Saying that we support Israel because it is a democracy is pretty specious argument; if that was the case, we would have supported Taiwan in the U.N.
