I see DSL as a stop-gap solution that will not be satisfactory ten years from now. In other words it has little long term future. That's because it is limited in the upload capability and does not allow mesh networking of users that is possible from IP switched FWBB. Bandwidth needs will increase dramatically over the next few decades and more data will be transmitted both ways rather than primarily to the user. DSL does a lousy job accommodating uploads. Cable isn't that much better because it is typically throttled down to ISDN rates. Fixed wireless has greater upload bandwidth and the ability to mesh users into a localized network so that local traffic can stay off the back bone grid.
