Well, I have to tell you about my experience I just had. I also made a new friend today! I'm getting in my car after leaving PetSmart and notice a young female putting animals in the Humane Society van. Keep in mind that the temperature outside is around 92 degrees. I got in my car and noticed she walked off....very...very...very slowly back into the store. I said to myself, "I know she didn't just put animals in a hot van!" and I got out of my Tahoe and walked over to the van. Sure enough, it was not running and one window was opened less than an inch!!!! I was horrified!!

I got on my cell phone and dialed the number off the van and got a recording. I also noticed a lady in an Explorer driving in a circle and she too was on her cell phone. She stopped behind the van and I walked over to her and asked if she was calling about the animals and she said yes. She and I were both furious and she parked her car and we walked into the store. As we are going in the young female came out carrying another animal headed toward the van. I stopped her and asked her did she have any idea how hot the inside of that van was and she just looked dumb and said "No"!!!!!

We were about livid by that time and headed straight back to where the HS was set up and asked who was driving the van. A lady said "I am" and I asked her why it wasn't running. I told her that a young female was loading animals into a hot van. All she had to say was she told her to open a window. My new friend told her she did....one window ..less than one inch!! We could not believe their "I don't care" attitude. We found the manager of PetSmart and told him what happened. He was surprised and said he would certainly speak to the person in charge, that he knew them well. We walked out and another lady got in the van and started it and stayed there. My friend had watched her load the first animal in the van and it had been in there at least 10 minutes before I came out.

Turns out the lady I met, (my partner in animal defense!!), was from a small town just north of here where I have family and she even knew my aunt and uncle there! Small world!

I knew you would appreciate my story. We are both calling the Humane Society tomorrow and letting them know what happened. They need to remind their staff about the dangers of this heat. It only takes minutes for an animal to die! Since I'm a member of the National Humane Society, I'm going to also let them know.

Oh well, I feel like I saved at least a dozen small dogs and cats today!!
