You have no evidence that the priesthood is insincere in its beliefs, for example, or that it does not serve at least as useful a function as the artist, by creating rituals that dignify, celebrate, and sanctify crucial moments in human existence, like birth, marriage, and death.You have no evidence that the priesthood exercises much control over anyone, in most societies. It appears that pagan societies were pretty undogmatic, for example, and that syncretism was not unusual, so that there was a quasi- free market in cults and doctrines. This was especially true in the Roman Empire, where the mystery cults and various gnostic sects vied with Judaism, Christianity, and the official paganism.
