The stocks that the portfolio managers re-invested into other parts of the
markets didn't do too shabbily either. Buffalo Small Cap scored in 2000 with
investments in education, gaming, financial services and health-care stocks.
Buffalo Small-Cap Fund has returned 29.80% a year during the last three
years, ranking it in the top 5% of its peer funds, according to Lipper. In the
last 12 months, the fund has gained 29.09%, ranking it in the top 10%.

The fund has crept back into technology stocks this year, moving its tech
exposure up to about 20%. Most of that was investment in semiconductor
and semiconductor-equipment stocks. These stocks are very cyclical, and
Laming expects them to come out of their slump soon. Many companies have
stopped ordering semiconductors due to excessive inventory, but Laming
believes the inventory surplus will work itself out and demand will roar back.
"After every bust, there's a boom," he says. "Applied Materials is going to
come out of this and boom just like it did after the Asian financial crisis."
