But, if news is released after the market close on expiration Friday that is favorable to MSFT and the stock jumps to 77 or 78 in after market trading, is there any way to still exercise the options since they technically do not expire until the next day?

All is not lost. From "Using Options to Buy Stocks" by Dennis Eisen. "To meet all deadlines and allow enough time for confirmation, brokerage firms typically require customers to submit exercise requests by 4:00 p.m eastern time on regular days and by 4:30 p.m. eastern time or soon thereafter on expiration Friday."
