PCCW and HKSAR Government Organize "The New IT Generation" Summer Camp
Leading IT companies to participate, provide technology and information
Hong Kong, June 9, 2001 - PCCW and the HKSAR Government are organizing Hong Kong's first jointly-held IT and integrated communications summer camp for secondary students, to be offered during July and August.
Approximately 240 students, between 14 and 17 years, will participate in one of four nine-day camps, which will feature six days of residence at the Hong Kong Institute of Education in Taipo. Summer camp organizers are PCCW, the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau, the Education Department and Hong Kong Education City, an education-themed website.
Sponsored by leading IT companies Adobe, Avaya and Compaq, the camp will provide participants with the latest information and telecommunications technology in today's business world.
Students will receive intensive IT, telecommunications and leadership training while testing their skills in field applications. Students will encounter real-life IT operations during site visits to various PCCW business units, a police call center, and the Government's ITSD (Information Technology Services Department) data center. Included in the camp is one day's work of community service.
"PCCW and the Government believe Hong Kong's future competitiveness depends on cooperative efforts such as this initiative," said Sylvia Lee, General Manager of PCCW's Group Enterprise Sales. "We hope the 'New IT Generation Summer Camp' will become a mainstay program that helps to enrich Hong Kong's next generation of IT professionals."
Students participating the summer camp will pay a fee of HK$500, which partially offsets the camp running cost. Five outstanding students of the camp will also be awarded with a free trip to Silicon Valley in the US at the end of the year.
PCCW has supported Hong Kong's high-tech progress by taking various leadership initiatives, spanning projects the size of the Cyberport to grassroots programs offering community support for IT development and education.
