NEW MILTON, England, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Genetix Group plc (LSE: GTX), the genomics and proteomics technology group, today announces a further move into the provision of proteomic tools with the launch of a powerful new protein spot excision system, the gelPix.
The gelPix system was developed in conjunction with the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Germany.
The gelPix is the first in a range of high precision robots, at the cutting edge of technology, designed to assist the researcher in discovering the function of proteins in the laboratory.
The launch of gelPix builds on Genetix's strong track record in colony picking in the field of genomics research. Genetix machines were used by Celera and by seven of the eight sequencing laboratories, which worked on the mapping of the human genome.
Mark Reid, Chief Executive of Genetix, said:
``With the mapping of the human genome completed, the discovery of the function of proteins in human health is now the main focus of interest for researchers. Genetix received the licence for gelPix from the Max Planck Institute in December 2000, and we have again demonstrated our ability to bring innovative new products rapidly to market. The gelPix confirms Genetix's determination to be at the forefront of the proteomics revolution just as we played a key role in deciphering the genome.''
Notes:
About gelPix
The gelPix is a high throughput protein spot excision system developed by Genetix, leaders in the field of automated robotic design. Protein gels are imaged using a high-resolution on-board camera and specific image analysis software is used to generate a protein target excision list. The selected proteins are then excised using a novel 8 channel excision head, which allows for high throughput, automated operation.
About Genetix
Genetix Group plc is based in New Milton, Hampshire, UK. It develops, manufactures and markets high-throughput equipment and related items used for research into human, animal and plant genomics and proteomics. It currently supplies equipment to more than 150 customers worldwide in the pharmaceutical, agricultural and food industries including GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Novartis, Celera Genomics, Millennium Pharmaceuticals and the Max Planck Institutes.
Genetix acquired the Genpak group in October 2000 before floating successfully on the London Stock Exchange in November 2000. Results for the year ended 31 December 2000 showed turnover of 10.7m pounds sterling (up 46%) and profit before tax of 3.6m pounds (up 13%), excluding exceptional flotation costs. The Group has made a significant contribution to the Human Genome Project by supplying equipment to seven of the leading eight laboratories involved in the consortia...
