Motorola Provides End-to-End (CDMA) Solutions in $41 Million Contract in Mexico

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Four wireless telephone operating companies in northern Mexico, currently under management control of Telefonica Moviles (NYSE: TEM - news), have signed a $41 million expansion contract with Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) to provide an end-to-end Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) solution. The expansion will begin immediately and includes Motorola network equipment and applications for launching key value-added services, handsets and professional services.

The deal positions the telecom operators for a smooth migration to 2.5 and third generation (3G) wireless technologies, both of which will provide increased voice capacity and data rates. The network expansion can support future growth for Bajacel, Movitel, Norcel and Cedetel, the four operating companies in the North of Mexico. These companies service an area with a combined population of more than 20 million.

The contract includes sleek Motorola Talkabout® T2260 and Talkabout 182 dual-mode digital handsets that among other things will enable Telefonica to enter the new wireless messaging arena. Additionally, the contract includes SC(TM) 4812T base transceiver stations, controllers and electronic mobile exchange (EMX®) platforms. Installation of the Motorola end-to-end system is under way and full commercial deployment is expected by the end of the year.

``We have plans to build out and expand the CDMA network in Northern Mexico, and we are confident Motorola will continue to support our needs of top quality digital network infrastructure, support services and terminals,'' said the chief executive officer of the four operating companies.

``This is the second major expansion in a year in Northern Mexico, and Motorola is in full support of the wireless operators' plans for accelerated subscriber growth and a smooth migration to next generation systems,'' said Jose Figueroa, vice president and general manager of the Latin America and Caribbean region for Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector.
