Eric L: As you know, it has seemed to me that if Vodafone insists on W-CDMA, Verizon Wireless will comply. Everything in Gent's history shows if he considers something important, he will find a way.
If he considers W-CDMA worldwide essential, Verizon Wireless will use it IMO.
Note especially the following most interesting choice of language from the Verizon [sic.] spokesperson:
<<Verizon Wireless confirmed that Vodafone is encouraging it to eventually go the W-CDMA route: 'We certainly have every intention to take every advantage of our international footprint with our parent company, and that likely means W-CDMA,' says spokeswoman Andrea Linskey.
Short-term plans remain firm, Linskey points out>>
Note well the phrase "with our parent company", i.e. Vodafone - the company that own a minority (45%) of Verizon Wireless.
This is most revealing of mindset or mindshare.
One would have thought that since Verizon (the old Bell Atlantic plus) owns 55% of Verizon wireless, that Verizon would have been the "parent company".
Reflects Gent's power, influence and determination IMO.
Best.
