What if app servers become a commodity? As more customers request (require) J2EE compliance of their app servers, what will justify the hefty price that BEA charges for their products? I think BEA has overshot much of the market in performance and functionality, in pursuit of big name customers with deep pockets. As other vendors (even open source solutions) begin to meet the needs of customers on the lower end of market, what's to stop them from attacking BEA from below?

I think the app server and enterprise tools space will get very interesting in the next few years.
