I do not think that is the moral. One should understand the business practices of all firms before investing in them. Hedging is a legitimate financial tool to manage risk, that can be used or abused. One size does not fit all, and a sweeping generalization that "hedging is bad" is not a substitute for due diligence.

There are gold firms with modest gold hedges, but huge currency hedges, which theoretically could cause more problems. Also, having a no hedge policy doesn't do much good for a firm that has marginal operations, high debt, poor cash flow, no earnings, etc..
