We hadn't seen our peahen in a couple of weeks. Figured she must be sitting on a clutch of eggs.
My daughter and I were out in Jett's pasture, hunting thistles, when my daughter found the peahen. Down in a little dip in the tall grass, but not the thickest part, there she was. Sitting.
So, we pretended not to see her, and went about our business.
A little later, I thought I saw her strutting into the barn, followed by the guinneas. Oh well, I thought, no clutch of eggs. Nice to have the peahen back, though, we'd missed her. Yep, there she was sitting in some hay one of my horses had strewn around his stall.
I had just stepped into the tack room when my daughter called out, Daddy! Daddy! She has two chicks!
And so it was. Two little peachicks following mom! The guinneas act like two proud spinster aunts helping guard and protect the the little brood. They're about 5 inches tall. Don't know when they were hatched. But the peahen was obviously proud to show them off.
I guess now she figured that she'd been 'seen', she might as well show off her chicks. Soon, afterwards, she took them back to the nest in the field.
I did run and get the camera!
