Re: China / tech

Did anyone else see FCC Chairman Reed Hunt on Charlie Rose the other day? He said that China adds the equivalent of another Bell System (not sure if he was referring to Ma Bell or one of the babies) every year, and that most of it is connected via new land lines (as opposed to wireless as many in the west assume is the route they are going --cheeeeaaaapppp labor makes it possible.)

His point was that the size of the China market is difficult for us to comprehend. I have head it said that if every person in China ate one more egg per week, it would take the entire grain production of Australia to feed the extra chickens required to lay them.

Still, I don't mind having Syquest involved with them at this point rather than IOM.

A friend of mine has become somewhat of a leading expert in the field of extracting natural gas from coal seams. He has spent several months at a time deep in the interior of China trying to help them develop an extraction program. He has found most everything about their system and approach to modernization to be totally counter productive to their goals. Whatever route China does eventually follow to technical modernization on a wide scale societal level will be a far different one than a westerner would envison.

IOM has enough growth problems on its hands without having to deal with all that. I would hope they will stay in touch with what is happening there and be able to take advantage of future opportunities.
