John,
RE:"You need to look at the percentage of the total sale. Then you need to look at COGS. Then you have to determine who is participating in the rebate, is it just Intel, does it include Rambus, does it include other component makers."

The adds I see say $200 rebate on Intel systems.
I doubt if AMD is participating. I'm willing to bet that Intel is participating. I do not know the creative details of who's paying.

RE:"Maybe after you have all that information, you can venture a guess as to the effect on Intel's GM from those sales, which are still a small part of overall sales"

Lets just look at the evidence.
1. Intel had to subsidize RDRAM...$70 at first then $50 then none but the price of a P4 went down to compensate for the lack of rebate.
2. Intel subsidizes avertisement.
3. Intal has to be giving up something to get retailers to give a $200 Intel system rebate...

1 and 3 are not the historical norm for Intel.

RE:"Sometimes a marketing program can meet short term objectives that lead to longer term positives."

Since you were a national sales manager, as I was at one time BTW, I won't argue. They pay big bucks now a days for people who can figure out ways to extract money from the public without them knowing too much about it.
Reminds me of a letter a friend got a few years back saying he won a free boat. All he had to do was pay for shipping, $120. The boat came and it was worth about $30.
