Ira, you just discovered the biggest tax loophole corporations are using, share buy backs. Two years ago or so, when I needed to show that stocks, based on dividends are not really expensive, I calculated the pretax dividends for few companies, like MRK, that buy their shares in the market almost every year. It turned out that at the time, MRK had a yield of 8% before taxes, despite the fact that they paid a measly 1.3% dividends. One of these days, someone will get smart in congress and they will close this loophole.
