Hi Win Smith; I have no scuttlebut regarding the situation with the i845.

If I had to make a total and complete guess, I'd speculate that Rambus and Intel made an agreement to allow Intel to support DDR for the desktop in 2002 (i.e. a year early), but in return, Intel was specifically precluded from giving a license to VIA or Nvidia to make P4 chipsets.

I'd bet that the recent commentary from inside Intel saying that the company is still a bit split over how to approach RDRAM vs DDR is true. The support for RDRAM is concentrated at the high levels of Intel, not the engineering or sales level. In situations where Intel has put itself into a position (either through boneheaded contractual obligations or because of mistakes in project management from 2~3 years ago) of having only RDRAM chipsets for a market segment, their own sales reps are suggesting that Intel CPUS be paired up with chipsets from their competitors.
