something to ponder is the number of empty slots in the telecom gear chassis that are deployed. If there are few empty slots, then the next cycle would see purchases of more lower margin chassis and common equipment. If there are a lot of empty slots, the next cycle will be of purchases of higher margin interface boards. Often you will find that vendors will take a short term hit on margins to get chassis deployed so that they can garner higher margins in the future. This has the added benefit of locking out the competition since the incremental cost of the chassis and the interface cards will be prohibitive.

The answer is: lots of empty slots out there.
