A sequence of three deadly drugs was injected into his right leg. Sodium thiopental was administered to render him unconscious; pancuronium bromide was used to stop his breathing and paralyze the body; finally, potassium chloride was injected to stop his heart. Each drug alone was administered in a lethal dose.

McVeigh's eyes were wide open and his lips were tight before the drugs were administered, as if he was trying to control his environment. When the first drug was administered, he let out a couple of deep breaths, then a fluttery breath. Smith said McVeigh's eyes rolled up into his head before he died.

McViegh was given the opportunity to choose his last food. He chose two pints of mint-chocolate chip ice cream.

A victim of the bombing didn't know she had eaten her last meal. Perhaps she would have chosen something different had she known she was going to die. But she didn't die that day. She died the next day. She had been in a social security office waiting in line to file routine paperwork when the explosion ripped away her surroundings. Part of the structure fell and trapped her, pinning her legs and torso under a mass of concrete. In the few moments of lucidity that she experienced she thought of her family and her God, but for the most part she suffered terribly with the pain of her mortal injuries. After what seemed like week, but was only a matter of hours, she died. But her family still hoped that she might be found alive in the crumbled ruins of the building. Several days later they knew that their worst fears were true. They had no time to prepare for this. It had been forced upon them by the 'army of one': Timothy McVeigh.
