[Dream Job...]Golf-management major makes grade

Jeffrey Yi knew he would get ribbed when he informed family and friends that he was about to enter a program in professional golf management at Campbell University in
North Carolina.
"You mean, you can major in that?" was the initial response of his father. "So what do you learn, Caddying 101?" quipped a fellow classmate.
Jokes aside, golf management is serious business. The rapid growth of private golf courses has fueled the demand for educated and trained professionals. Golf courses are now
multilayered operations, with restaurants, pro shops and tournaments that require staffers who can do more than just shag balls and mow grass.
Last month, North Carolina State University in Raleigh announced plans to offer a degree in professional golf management. Campbell University, in Buies Creek, and
Methodist College of Fayetteville already offer a similar degree program.
Beginning in fall 2002, the 150 students who are expected to enroll in the NCSU program will take a range of courses from turf management to food and beverage
operations.
