American Power Conversion Selected to Provide Local Power and Battery Back-up for Optical Solutions' FiberPath(R)400 System biz.yahoo.com -APC's PowerShield(TM) to Help Ensure Reliability for Fiber-to-the-Home Applications WEST KINGSTON, R.I., and MINNEAPOLIS, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- To address the powering needs of fiber-optic solutions that deliver voice, video and high-speed data directly to the home, American Power Conversion and Optical Solutions Inc. today announced a partnership that will provide Optical Solutions' FiberPath® customers with APC's PowerShield(TM), a local power and surge protection device that is installed directly in the customer's home.
Optical Solutions selected APC's PowerShield as its battery back-up and local power source because it is cost-effective, easier to use and manage, and has a longer life cycle than other power systems. Since the PowerShield is installed directly in the home, it is not subjected to environmental conditions that can weaken or shorten the life of the system. Therefore, less stress is put on the battery and components in the unit. Additionally, APC offers a battery management and recycling program that is user-friendly. Batteries for the PowerShield can easily be replaced and shipped back to APC, saving the service provider valuable time and money for unnecessary service calls.
``APC power technology enables the FiberPath 400 system to deliver non-stop voice, video and data services to the home,'' said Darryl Ponder, Optical Solutions' Chairman and CEO. ``APC's award-winning power systems are known throughout the technology industry and we are excited to provide our customers with their reliable units for our fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) customers.''
``In order to match the level of reliability demanded by the traditional phone network, every telephony solution should be outfitted with battery backup technology to help ensure essential availability, particularly with primary line communications such as 911,'' said Ed Bednarcik, general manager of APC's Business Networks Group. ``Optical Solutions is breaking ground in delivering fiber services directly to the home and we are pleased to be working with them to provide a reliable local power solution to help them remain up and running.''
About FiberPath
As a complete fiber-optic solution for FTTH deployments, FiberPath 400 encompasses three sets of equipment: a headend bay of equipment, which can be co-located with a class 5 switch or interconnected through a GR-303 interface, a cost-effective passive optical network (PON) system to ``split'' the fiber from the central switching office to the home, and a customer premise node. The headend bay sends and receives laser-drive light signals through optical fiber cables to and from a residence-mounted node via the passive optical network. The node is mounted on the side of each home and converts the optical signals into electronic signals needed for subscribers' existing telephones, televisions and data modems.
About APC's PowerShield
APC's latest PowerShield is a 12VDC battery backup unit that serves as the primary power supply for telephone communication ports as well as a local powering source for the customer premise equipment supporting the FiberPath system. The PowerShield will notify the service provider of the power supply's health and status. This includes notification if the battery is in use; unable to supply power; needs replacing; is missing or is not properly connected. These communication features provide proactive monitoring and maintenance that help ensure the end user up and running during any power disturbance.
PowerShield is also available in -48VDC to locally power cable telephony, wireless local loop (WLL), voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and voice over digital subscriber line (VoDSL) applications.
