Muffy had been staring at Precious, trying to work up the nerve to ask her about her past.
"Hmmmm", thought Muffy. "Precious mentioned an orphanage. I'm from an orphanage. I wonder ... Nah ... couldn't be ... but, maybe ..."
She finally decided to confront Precious.
"Say, Precious", Muffy began. "That's an unusual name. How did you get it? Was it the name of one of your family members, or something?"
Precious was pleasantly surprised that someone would take an interest in her. Other than her amazing ability to count anything and everything, the only other interest in her was usually .... um, shall we say .... physical, in nature. She eyed Muffy closely, wondering if, perhaps, Muffy was one of those mixed up women she had run into a time or two in her splotchy past. Like that one gal, in particular, who was in charge of the activities at the orphanage. She always seemed to be able to schedule moments alone with her favorite female orphans. Precious had avoided those conveniently scheduled activities after that first ... happening.
Deciding that Muffy looked serious enough about her query, Precious said, "Well, after I was adopted from the orphanage, my new mother thought I was just the cutest little thing. She introduced me to her neighbor as her 'precious new daughter'. And, it stuck."
Muffy thought about that for a split second, then decided to press onward, her hopes for a reunion with a long lost childhood friend still alive.
"So", said Muffy. "You really are an orphan? Me, too! Uh ... what was your name before you became Precious?"
Precious counted the seconds as they ticked off. She was reluctant to mention her name in public. She never did like it. A pregnant pause ensued ...
Muffy got impatient, then read back through the script. Several episodes ago, she had mentioned her bestest ever childhood friend from the orphanage, Matilda.
"Wait", said Muffy. "Here it is", as she held up the script for the audience to read. "Oh, yeah. There's two of them. Gotta' read them both. There are clues in there that we'll need in future episodes."

After the audience had been given sufficient time to read the script for the prior episodes, Muffy turned to Precious and awaited her response to Muffy's question about Precious' original name.
Just then, the door opened, and the waiter walked in.
He looked around the kitchen which was now in complete disarray, with all the shelves cleared, and broken plates all over the floor. He was dumbfounded. When he noticed the big mixer on the table with an octopuss' tentacle hanging out of it, he did a doubletake.
"Phew!", he exclaimed, as the stench of rotting sea life attacked his nostrils. "What a smell!"
Then, he noticed the empty alcohol containers strewn all about the kitchen, and knew that his career as Caretaker of the Still was just about over. He briefly wondered how he would be able to pay for his weekly bowling league participation. |
