Well, the Jews formed a distinctive people, due, of course, to the religious community. As Jews began to assimilate, how could they retain their identity as a people without a territory of their own? Additionally, an historic injustice had driven them out of their homeland, although communities of scholars helped retain the historic connection. But the main thing was the fear of the rise of anti- semitism with the development of mass politics in Europe. The Dreyfuss Affair was a particular catalyst to Herzl, for example. The early Zionists saw the possibility of Hitler, not necessarily of the exterminationist policy, but of the use of Jew bashing by a populist movement, and the rise of persecution to new levels......
