You make an excellent point. Most commodity producers are deep pocketed companies that can afford to hang on through the money losing years. Then they make their money when the sun shines. In the long run they hope the net effect is on the plus side. -- I've been there and done that in the chip business.

If the California government is willing to subsidize these companies in the bad years to keep them profitable, then demonizing them for their high profits in good years could arguably be fair.

Do you think Gray Davis would be willing to guarantee to subsidize them in the bad years in order to get "fair pricing" today.
