NEC unveils servers based on Intel's Itanium processors

Jun 12, 2001 (CORPORATE IT UPDATE via COMTEX) -- The Japanese electronics manufacturer NEC Corp has introduced two new lines of servers that are equipped with up to 16 CPUs
featuring Intel Corp's new 64-bit Itanium processors.

The server lines are called Express5800/1000 Series and TX7/AzusA Series. The servers in the Express5800/1000 line are based on Linux or Windows and are initially targeted at customers in
the science and technology fields. As more software becomes available NEC intends to expand its sales of the line to include other fields.

The TX7/AzusA Series, meanwhile, is a new family of TX7 technical servers based on the HP-UX operating system. This line will also be sold for use in technical and science environments.

NEC intends to market the two server series only in Japan. However, the Express 5800/1000 line will be offered in Europe by NEC European Supercomputers Systems as a component of
integrated high-performance computing solutions in combination with NEC's SX series supercomputers. Pricing details were not disclosed.
