Re: Add something intelligent to the conversation or stop wasting bandwidth

OK, you keep saying AMD has already "shown its hand" with a hybrid .18/.13 process. I couldn't find anything on that - no references that I could track down.

But I did find that while Intel's .18 was originally defined as...

intel
process Circuit Gate
generation Year size length CPU

P648 1989 1.00 micron 486
P650 1991 0.80 micron Pentium (60..66MHz)
P852 1993 0.50 0.50 micron Pentium (75..266MHz)
P854 1995 0.35 0.35 micron Pentium Pro
P856 1997 0.25 0.20 micron Pentium II
P858 1999 0.18 0.13 micron Pentium III / 4
P860 2001 0.13 0.07 micron Tualatin / Northwood
P1262 2003 0.10 0.05 micron
P1264 2005 0.07 0.03 micron

...they later switched to a "hybrid" .18 with 0.10 gate lengths instead of 0.13 gate lengths to get to 1GHZ on P3 and 1.7GHZ on P4:

Intel's 0.18-micron process technology normally produces transistors with a 0.13-micron gate length, but in his presentation Ghani said a method had been devised that allowed a notch to be introduced at the bottom of each transistor's polysilicon gate, thereby narrowing the gate length to 100 nm.

Maybe that's why the big move to .13 and copper only takes P3 from 1GHZ to 1.26GHZ and P4 from 1.9 to 2.4GHZ - it's really more like a move from .15 to .13 than .18 to .13.

But AMD expects the move from .18 A4 to SOI .13 A4 to take it from 1.7GHZ to 2.8GHZ.

Is that better?

Dan
