Tim, the danger of a limited release of scarce 1.8 GHz Palomino's, is that AMD's customers will sit on their hands waiting for the new chips. If even 10% of AMD's customers defer buying a slower chip because they want the unobtainable faster one, AMD is hurt big time. It only makes sense to sell scarce chips when there's an overall shortage of chips, not like now when there is a surplus.

And, BTW, as soon as AMD is capable of a volume release, they should do it. 80% of the population has no clue that an Athlon 1.2 is as fast as a P4 1.7. In fact, more than half the population probably believes that a P4 1.4 is faster than an Athlon 1.4. Fortunately, most of them are buying Celerons and Durons.

AMD needs marketing campaign emphasizing AMD MHZ > Intel MHZ at the exact instant that Intel starts launching the i845 SDRAM chipset.
