This point was articulated many years ago by Intel - Andy Grove, I think.

The bulk of the CPU revenues came from the "older" generation/speeds that were driven down in cost - and PRICE - and driven UP in Volume.

The very high end, high performance "new" CPUS - with HIGH ASPs - didn't contribute substantially to revenue due to the smaller market - and volume - of that market segment.
